Wikis-r-us

Welcome back,

As my series of blogs draw near to the finish line, I want to talk to you guys about a webinar I most recently attended. For those who do not know a webinar is an interactive place online where people can gather together and listen to a presenter talk about the subject of their choice. Most topics are relevant and informative, it is a great place to learn about new things and how to incorporate technology.

The webinar I attended focused on Wiki spaces and how they can be applied into a school setting. It focused mainly on how to navigate and use the tools and settings provided. The company is Wiki Spaces Private Label; they cater to classrooms, teachers, school and school districts.  They have free services and some that cost, it depends on who wants to use their system, but for an independent teacher their system is free.

Wiki Spaces are a great place to incorporate learning; it is even more effective when used in a collaborative format that allows peers to learn and feed off each other. Students love wiki’s because it not only allows them to use technology, but it teaches them new things. It is a tool that helps students benefit and use knowledge learned over the internet and compile it all into one space. Research pages and Internet navigation has never been as much fun for students.

Teachers love wiki spaces equally as much. A wiki page is not only easy to use and to develop but is a great asset to teaching which makes it an easy way to motivate students and have them working together. What I liked in the webinar was that it mentioned wikis allow teachers to communicate and exchange ideas. With their unlimited access, anywhere you are, you can access the wiki and make changes as you wish. This is good because it allows the students to study even when they are not in class. As well it helps the teacher monitor their students progress and gives them access to guiding students out of the classroom context.

In all, I encourage you to check out a webinar of your choice, it doesn’t have to be about ICT use or even about Wiki Spaces, feel free to explore and navigate into your own interests, there is most likely a webinar out there for you.
